TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY
AT ANY AGE
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle at all ages is
important, particularly for baby boomers who
are experiencing firsthand the benefits of
preventive medicine.
Infirmary Health Seniors’
Best
health and wellness program is
designed exclusively for adults ages 55 and older. Created with
senior lifestyles in mind, Seniors’
Best
oers a single point of
access to an array of exclusive benefits, discounts, educational
opportunities and special events.
Living a healthy life starts with steps you can take on your
own—lifestyle choices that can prevent or control many
conditions you may face as you age. Through the Seniors’
Best
program, members may take advantage of tips on how to:
»
Exercise regularly.
This helps reduce your risk for
many diseases. Exercise also improves balance and helps
you to avoid falls.
Try to get 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity
aerobic activity—such as bicycling, brisk walking or
pushing a lawn mower. On two or more days of the week, you
should also do muscle-strengthening activities that work all
major muscle groups.
»
Stay engaged.
Get out and have some fun. Studies show that
older adults who are involved in hobbies or social activities
live longer, healthier lives than peers who are more isolated.
»
Follow a healthy diet.
A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and
whole grains is key to avoiding many of the health problems
that often occur in older adults. It’s also important to avoid
saturated fats and excess salt.
»
Quit smoking.
If you’re a smoker, try to quit. Quitting
reduces your risks for cancer, heart attack and lung disease.
In fact, quitting will likely add years to your life.
»
Watch your weight.
Weighing too much or too little increases
your risk for a number of diseases or even premature death.
Ask your doctor about how to maintain your ideal weight.
From blood sugar screenings to seminars and holiday
festivities, Seniors’
