NEW TREATMENT
OPTIONS FOR AN
UNCOMFORTABLE
PROBLEM
Hemorrhoids are one of the most
common colorectal complaints heard
by primary care physicians. Each year,
more than 10 million people suffer
from this painful condition.
Some changes in lifestyle and
activity can prevent the onset of
hemorrhoids. However, what often
begins as an annoyance for pregnant
women, overweight people and
people over the age of 50 can esca-
late to a condition requiring medical
or surgical intervention.
Diagnostic & Medical Clinic now
offers a nonsurgical alternative
for the treatment of hemorrhoids.
During the brief and painless
procedure, the physician places a
small rubber band around the tissue
just above the internal hemorrhoid,
where there are few pain-sensitive
nerve endings. The banding
procedure works by cutting off the
blood supply to the hemorrhoid.
This causes the hemorrhoid to shrink
and fall off, typically within a day
or two.
“We are now able to utilize a
disposable banding device to
offer our patients a nonsurgical,
office-based treatment that is fast
and remarkably complication free,”
says Steven Orleans, M.D., a general
surgeon with Diagnostic & Medical
Clinic. “Most patients generally
return to their normal activities the
same day.”
Before the treatment, physicians
conduct a routine internal and
external exam to chart the patient’s
condition and ensure that no other
disease is causing the symptoms.
The procedure is covered by most
insurance, and anesthesia is not
required.

nonsurgical treatment option,
