FOUNDATION FUNDS LATEST IN
ROBOTIC TECHNOLOGY
Mobile Infirmary is now home to two new da Vinci

Si
™
Surgical Systems—the latest in robotic technology—
courtesy of a generous donation from the Infirmary
Foundation. Mobile Infirmary introduced robotic surgery
to the region in 2006.
To date, surgeons have performed nearly 2,000
da Vinci procedures, with 27 surgeons trained to use
robotic technology. Patients undergoing this type of
minimally invasive surgery experience less pain, less
blood loss, a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.
“The new robots allow us to make improvements
to some of the most advanced surgical procedures
we currently perform, such as nerve-sparing prostate
removal and nephron-sparing renal cell cancer surgery,
in which only the tumor is removed and the remainder of
the kidney is spared to prevent kidney failure,” says Paul
Scott, M.D., surgeon.
“In addition, we are now able to provide new proce-
dures to treat head and neck cancers, colon cancer and
diseases of the lung and heart. Many of these procedures
were not previously offered in our region,” he adds.
With the new robots, simulators are offered that are
like those used in the aviation industry. This allows more
rapid and improved training forsurgeons.
“We are so pleased to provide surgeons at Mobile
Infirmary with the most advanced robotic technology,”
says Leslie Ladd, Infirmary Foundation chairman.
“Infirmary Foundation purchased the first robots, and
we will continue our commitment to provide the hospital
and the community with state-of-the-art technology.”

Infirmary Foundation has
purchased state-of-the-art
infant warmers for the labor
and delivery department at Mobile Infirmary. Proceeds
from the 19th annual Golf Tournament, held Oct. 20
at The Country Club of Mobile, funded this gift. The
tournament raised more than $200,000.
The new infant warmers are used primarily to warm
babies soon after their birth and allow them to remain
cozy and content during their first physical exam and
bath. In addition to providing comfort, these warmers
are specially designed with lifesaving equipment in the
event of a childbirth emergency.
“We greatly appreciate the support from Infirmary
Foundation in helping us continue our mission of
providing the best obstetrical care to our community,”
says Ina Hall, nurse manager.
